If you're obsessed with those super pretty spring Starbucks cups, you're going to love these beautiful spring paintings inspired by the designs! Plus, they're so easy to make that you can whip them up while watching your favorite TV show. | DIY Painting Idea |

I’m low-key obsessed with the spring cups that Starbucks has had in their stores all spring. Those bright, vibrant colors make me smile every time I see them, and the hand-drawn style of the doodles are so whimsical and fun. I may or may not have been swinging by to grab some coffee on the regular just because those cups are too cute. But since they’re limited edition, I totally wanted to re-create the look on canvases that I could display every spring! These DIY spring paintings are so easy to make, too, so you can snag this style for yourself.

See? These cups are too adorable, and they’re begging to inspire art for the home, too!

Supplies Needed

These canvases don’t take that many supplies, and you can pick up the paint at your local Walmart (that’s where I found mine).

  • 6×12 canvases. You’ll need one for each painting you’re doing. I chose to do 3, one for each of the cup colors Starbucks released this spring, because I really love the look of 3 paintings displayed together, but you can go with as many or as few as you’d like. A 6×12 size works well because the shape is perfect for mirroring the shape of a Starbucks cup, but also because it looks great overall.
  • Acrylic paint in yellow, green, and blue. I really like the colors Bright Yellow, Kiwi, and Bimini Blue from Apple Barrel, but any yellow, spring green, and pretty sky blue will work perfectly.
  • Paintbrushes (I think the sponge type give really quick, easy coverage and don’t leave too many brush strokes)
  • A 4-4 1/2 inch cardboard circle, to give you the white space you need on the canvas
  • A black permanent marker

How to Make DIY Spring Paintings inspired by Starbucks

To make the DIY Spring paintings, start by getting a feel for how big you’d like your circle to be. I traced a bowl that was about the right size, between 4 and 4 1/2 inches. Cut the circle out; you’ll be using this to define your white space on your canvas.

To paint the painting, find the center and place the cardboard in the middle of the canvas. Hold it down firmly as you paint everywhere around it, trying to keep the line as clean as possible. Remove the circle carefully after you paint, but before it begins to dry (so you don’t risk cardboard drying onto your painting).

Repeat with each color you’re using until you’ve got 3 painted canvases. If needed, apply a second coat using the same process when the painting dries.

Allow the canvases to fully dry before moving onto the next step. I personally painted them one night while watching television, and then I finished the project the next night when they were fully dry. Overall, the paintings only take about 30 minutes total, but allowing for that dry time in there really helps.

Once your canvases are thoroughly dried, you can start by making your artwork. I chose to sketch mine out with a pencil lightly, but those more confident can dive right in with the permanent marker.

There’s a lot of freedom in this, as the Starbucks cups were very hand-drawn inspired. The designs they had were gorgeous, so I adapted my favorites on the blue and yellow canvases, then went with something different on the green canvas. I did the sun, umbrella, and tulip, but you can do literally anything your heart desires on these canvases. Taking inspiration and running with it is half the fun.

Once you’re fully happy with your sketches, trace carefully over them with a black permanent marker.

That’s it! Because these DIY spring paintings are so easy to make, you can seriously make a full series of them, or make plenty more as gifts. My grandmother actually loved these so much that I gifted them to her, so I’ll definitely be making another set for myself.
