The 4th of July pretty much always means family time for me. In our town, it’s legal to do fireworks, so for years, we’ve spent time watching the marvelous displays our neighbors create while lighting a few fountains of our own. It’s great watching it from the comfort of our own yard instead of going to a display because we can seriously enjoy food and drinks and each others’ company without worrying about bugging those nearby at the display. This year, though, we are totally looking forward to these Red, White, and Blue Slushes that are perfect for Independence Day. They’re not hard to make, either!

Any time I want to make a fun statement with a slush or mocktail, I love to start by rimming the glass with corn syrup and colored sugar. You could totally swap in popping candies for a fun, festive experience. But, red and blue sugar works just as well for a patriotic look!

To make a layered slush, you’ll want to make each layer separately. I started with the blue layer, but you can start with whichever layer you’d like to be on the bottom. The slush consistency, rather than density, is what keeps this drink layered, which means you can totally mix and match! For the blue layer, you’ll want to use 1 1/2 ounce of lemon lime soda, 3 ounces of blue sports drink in any flavor you’d like, and 3 ounces of blue raspberry prepared drink mix (the mixes that come in a packet that you make with water and sugar!). You’ll blend all of that up with 1 cup of ice.

Spoon the blue slush mixture into your drinking vessel of choice, filling the glass around 1/3 of the way full. This slush recipe is enough for 2 32-ounce jars, but you can always make them in smaller glasses to spread the love more!

Between layers, freeze the slush in the jars. You don’t have to freeze it long, but popping the glasses into the freezer while you prepare the next layer helps prevent them from melting, which would cause the next layer to sink beneath the first.

For the white layer, you’ll want to combine 1 1/2 ounce of lemon lime soda, 3 ounces of any white sports drink, and 3 ounces of Pina Colada mixer. Add in 1 cup of ice and blend.

For most blenders, it is best to put liquids first, then soft ingredients, and then finish with hard ingredients (like ice) so you don’t totally burn out your mixer. Check with your own blender’s instructions to see if there’s another order you should be using for your specific device.

Spoon the mixture carefully over the first layer. Spooning instead of pouring helps that layered effect stay intact so you get more defined layers! Pop the glasses back into the freezer to help the layers stay separate.

For the top layer, you’ll want to add in a little bit of real fruit flavor! Use 1 1/2 ounces of lemon lime soda, 3 ounces of any red sports drink, and 3 ounces of strawberry daiquiri mixer. Finish with half a cup of frozen strawberries and half a cup of ice.

Blend it up, making sure that the chunks of strawberry are now slush consistency also. While you can use fresh strawberries, freezing them first is the best way to maintain that slush consistency throughout.

Serve this patriotic treat right away to avoid the layers blending too much. A little puff of whipped topping and a straw or umbrella can be fun additions to this Independence Day drink!
