These Inside Out cupcakes are so easy to make that kids of any age can do it! Using store-bought ingredients, it's perfect for little ones to make these treats inspired by Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust, Fear, and even Bing Bong from the Inside Out Movie!

We are still having a blast with Inside Out here, and since my son is a huge fan of being in the kitchen, we decided to make some awesome Inside Out Emotions cupcakes together! It’s so simple to do that almost any age can make Inside Out cupcakes of their very own, inspired by your favorite characters, like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, Fear, and even Bing Bong!

To make these, start with a store bought cake mix (white or vanilla cake will work best). You’ll want to make this according to package directions.

Divide your mixture into 6 different bowls (or fewer, if you don’t want to make all of the characters). If you’re dividing a standard cake mix into all six characters, then you’ll get roughly 4 cupcakes in each color.

For anger, use red food coloring; for sadness, blue; disgust should be green… etc. I used gel food coloring, but you can use your favorite neon colors. You’re going to want a really bright, vibrant color, and gel colors achieve this really well without thinning it out too much.

My son, being a big fan of Good Mythical Morning on youtube, likes to call cupcake wrappers Cupcake Pants, so spoon your filling into your favorite cupcake pants. We chose some plain black and white ones, but you can match them to the cupcake colors if you choose, or use whatever you’ve got lying around! Then, bake according to package directions and cool completely.

In the meantime, encourage your kids to help you tint frosting to each of the six colors you tinted your cupcakes to, or use store bought pre-tinted frostings. We just tinted vanilla frosting to the colors of our liking using the same gel food coloring. When cool, allow your children to frost the cupcakes. We just cut the tip off of a piping bag, but if you’d like to use a fancy tip, you can do that, too!

Next, top each cupcake with shimmery candy pearls or chocolate pearls in various colors (I found mine in the baking section of my local grocery store). If there’s a color you can’t find, consider rolling up tinted fondant into balls; if you’d like, then you can use luster dust (widely available in the baking aisles of craft stores) mixed with a little bit of flavored extract to paint that signature shimmer on the balls. Or, you can just leave them matte and use your imagination to see them as memory spheres– your choice.

For a Bing Bong cupcake, skip the Memory Spheres and place a nice big tuft of pink cotton candy on top! Other great options would be a purple bow of fondant or candy, or a collection of assorted memory spheres, just like Bing Bong liked to collect in his bag in the movie!

Don’t forget to get creative with it– mix colors of icing and memory spheres to create your very own special cupcakes! There are no rules here. Create cupcakes inspired by all of your favorite memories and then enjoy them together, making great memories of baking together.
