Crock Pot S’mores Lava Cake

This ooey-gooey s'mores cake is perfect for the chocolate lover in your life. It's a perfect lava cake made in the crock pot. What beats slow cooker cake? A chocolatey, rich, lava slow cooker cake, that's what!

Did you quit your New Years’ Resolution diet yet? Promise you didn’t give up chocolate for Lent? Good, then you can have this cake… it’s ooey, it’s gooey, it’s chocolate and marshmallow goodness, and it’s perfect for those intense chocolate cravings. And even better, it’s made in the crock pot, so you can set it, forget it, and come back for that delicious s’mores goodness. If you’re looking for the perfect crock pot cake, this is your best bet!

While I am all about a good diet, and I am still trying to get through mine as best as I can, I’m also okay with a cheat day now and again. And if anything is worth a good cheat, well, it’s this cake… mmm, this gooey, decadent, lava cake. It’s just dripping with chocolatey goodness. But dieters, beware– this treat is RICH. (And so, totally, absolutely worth it).

Start out with your favorite chocolate cake mix. Prepare the ingredients according to package directions. Spray a crock pot with cooking spray, then pour the batter into the slow cooker.

Next, mix chocolate pudding mix with 2 cups of cold milk, whisking according to package directions.

Sprinkle the top generously with mini marshmallows. The mini ones work best here to get nice and gooey, but you’ll get the same flavor if you buy regular marshmallows, and they’ll work just fine, too. Spread the pudding on top of the marshmallows gently.

Top the pudding with graham cracker crumbs and chocolate chips, and you’re all ready to set it and forget it. Place your slow cooker lid on your crock pot, cooking on low for 2 1/2 to 3 hours… that will give it long enough to get gooey, but not overdone. You’ll want to switch the slow cooker off when the edges are done, but not overdone. The inside will continue to cook in the warm slow cooker even as you serve from the edges.

This is one of my favorite cake recipes ever. I know that it’s not the prettiest dessert on the planet, more akin to a cobbler than a layer cake, but the flavor is on point and so amazing that you’ll be making this one again and again!

This crock pot cake is so rich and delicious… a glass of cold milk pairs perfectly with it! From the melted marshmallows to the crumbly graham crackers, and of course, the rich chocolate, you’ll be enjoying s’more flavor all year round. This cake is winter’s answer to that fireplace treat.

    1. So glad you think it looks great! It was a huge hit around here. If you try it, be sure to let me know what you thought!

  1. How big was the crock pot you used? I’ve only got a 6qt and I was wondering if I would need to double up on ingredients…

  2. How big was the crock pot that you used? I have 4 different sizes and I’m not sure which one to use. I’m going to have my husband do this for my birthday cake while camping next week – it looks absolutely delicious!

  3. Hi, can you tell me if the plus 2 cups cold milk is what you add to prepare the pudding, or is that extra? Thanks. Making this tonight.

    1. Since the pudding is prepared before you add it to the cake, you can use either one– just make sure to sub the 2 cups milk to go with Instant Pudding for whatever you’d need for cook and serve, and prepare it before adding it to the cake. Any of your favorite puddings will work!

    1. Brownie mix would likely give you great flavor, but it may not be the same texture, so your results may vary… if you try it, definitely let me know how it turns out!

  4. It would have been helpful to say to use instant pudding or to pre- make and cool (set) cooked pudding. What a mess.

    1. Hi, Becky. I’m so sorry to hear that it didn’t turn out as intended. The pudding I used was an Instant pudding mix that I prepared and then used. It was not make and cool cooked pudding. The filling is intended to be runny, to give it that lava cake feeling. Hope that helps!
